Ray Castillo
Kickboxing & strength
[ Karate 1st dan · Strength coach ]
Fourteen amateur kickboxing bouts, now a certified strength coach. Owns the 6 AM classes.
It started in a garage.
Maya opened Northpaw in 2012 with eleven students, a stack of puzzle mats and one rule: everybody bows in, everybody bows out.
Today we teach 340 students across four programs in a 6,000-square-foot school on Rucker Avenue. The mats are bigger. The rule hasn't changed.
Three rules on our mat
- 01 — Respect firstBow in, bow out, and thank your partner. Kids learn it on day one; adults are reminded often.
- 02 — No egosWe train hard and safe. Nobody proves anything on a beginner, and sparring is always your choice.
- 03 — Every age, every bodyFour-year-olds, fifty-year-olds, first-timers and lifers. There is a class here for you.
Questions
Before your first class.
What should I wear to my free class?
Shorts or sweatpants and a T-shirt. We train barefoot on the mats, and we lend gloves, shin guards or a gi for your first few classes.
I've never trained. Is that OK?
Most of our students started that way. Every class with a red dot on the schedule is built for new people, and a coach partners with you the first time.
What age can my child start?
Four. Mini kicks (ages 4-6) is 45 minutes of games, balance and listening skills; juniors (7-12) adds forms, pads and stripe tests.
Are there contracts or sign-up fees?
Neither. Memberships are month to month with 30 days' notice to cancel, and your first month has a money-back guarantee.
Do I have to spar?
No. Sparring classes are separate and optional, start from green belt, and always use headgear and controlled contact.
