Client reviews

It finally feels like us.

“She kept our grandmother’s table and built the dining room around it. That’s exactly what we wanted.”

The studio

Most rooms aren’t wrong, they’re unfinished: a sofa bought in a hurry, a lamp from the last apartment, a wall nobody could decide on. Ilse Wren started the studio in 2008 to finish them.

Atelier Wren is four designers in a former fruit-packing office on Orchard Row, working across the Gorge and in Portland.

“Buy fewer things, and keep them longer.”

Ilse Wren, founder and principal designer

Every project starts with a two-hour visit and a plain question: how do you actually use this room? Then come the floor plan, the materials and a single page of prices, so the budget is settled before anything is ordered.

Most of the furniture comes from makers within a day’s drive: walnut tables from The Dalles, linen upholstery from Portland, lamps turned in Bingen. Clients pay trade prices, and the markup is shown on every invoice.

If the first concept isn’t right, the studio redraws it free until it is. Installation usually takes a single day: the team hangs the art, makes the beds and leaves when the room is ready to use.
